Like cats, human toddlers who see themselves in a mirror also believe that they are looking at another child. This is an area of research for developmental psychologists who study how we develop a sense of ourselves. The researchers place a dot of lipstick on the toddler's nose and ask the child to touch it when they look in the mirror. Early on, the child will touch the mirror, however, by about 3 years, the child will touch his/her own nose, showing an understanding of who the person they see in the mirror actually is.
